In 2006, commercial vehicles registered in the United States totaled 107,943,782*. Although truck drivers exercise above average safety precautions, no one is immune from the dangers of weather, road hazards, or the actions of other drivers, even truck drivers. The government, with the cooperation of trucking companies, has made great strides in reducing the accidents involving commercial vehicles, and accidents have decreased by 3.4% between 2005 and 2006. Nationally, commercial trucks accounted for only 11.7% of all fatalities in motor vehicle accidents, and only 4.1% of all injuries. Even so, there were still 140,473 crashes involving commercial trucks in 2006. These caused nearly 5,000 fatalities and 86,000 injuries. In Iowa alone, there were 1,579 incidents with 74 deaths and 1,999 injuries. There are various causes for these, and an experienced Trucking Accident Lawyer is knowledgeable in helping you with all of the intricacies when you have been in an accident that involves a tractor trailer.
